6 Unique Backyard Swing Ideas for a Relaxing Outdoor Space

You’ve noticed that backyard swings seem to invite you to relax or to play, and generally evoke a kind of pleasant nostalgia. There is something magical about them! The right swing can turn your yard into a cozy place to relax or a fun addition for kids, and can also become a stylish element of the landscape.

How to make:

  1. Cut out a wooden seat (at least 3 cm thick).
  2. Sand the edges to avoid splinters.
  3. Drill two holes in the edges for the ropes.
  4. Thread through strong kapron or nautical ropes and tie securely.
  5. Attach the swing to a sturdy tree branch that can support a load of at least 250 pounds.

It is not at all superfluous to cover the wood with a protective varnish or yacht oil to prolong the life of the swing. Add soft cushions for more comfort and color.

Old car tires are a great base for a backyard swings. They are durable, affordable and eco-friendly, and by the way, you can give a second life to old rubber this way.

How to install:

  • Take the old tire, wash it thoroughly from dirt and oil.
  • Drill drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating inside.

Choose the hanging method:

  1. Horizontal. Attach three equally spaced ropes or chains for stability. 
  2. Vertical. Thread one rope through the center and tie a knot. You get one anchor point, hence the rotating swing
  • Attach the swing to a sturdy branch or crossbar (with a load capacity of at least 250 pounds) using carabiners or heavy-duty hooks.

You’ll notice that we didn’t spend much – it’s cheap, fun and suitable for both children and adults.

How to install:

  • Hang the chair on chains or strong ropes.
  • Make sure the fasteners are rated for the appropriate load.

On a stand.  If there is no suitable branch, you can buy a special stand.

Tip. Select a stylish textile covering, add decorative pillows and garland. This will add a special atmosphere of home coziness.

  • Sand the wooden pallet and treat it with a protective coating.

  • Drill holes in the corners and install metal rings with bolts – these will hold the ropes or chains.
