10 How to Preserve Flowers DIY Methods for Meaningful Keepsakes

Fresh flowers mark life’s most meaningful moments—from weddings and anniversaries to a bouquet “just because.” Instead of letting them fade away, try one of these simple DIY methods to turn blooms into lasting keepsakes.

1. Air-Dry a Bouquet

Remove lower leaves, tie stems together, and hang the bouquet upside down in a dark, dry space for two to three weeks. This classic method works especially well for roses, lavender, and baby’s breath.

2. Press Flowers in a Book

Place flowers between sheets of parchment paper inside a heavy book. Add extra weight and leave them for two to four weeks. Use pressed blooms in cards, bookmarks, or framed art.

3. Use a Flower Press

A wooden flower press offers more even pressure than a book. Arrange petals flat between absorbent paper, tighten the screws, and let nature do the rest.

4. Preserve Blooms With Silica Gel

Silica gel crystals dry flowers while helping them retain their shape and color. Gently cover blooms in an airtight container and leave them for several days.

5. Make Resin Jewelry

Add small dried flowers or petals to resin molds for beautiful pendants, earrings, keychains, or coasters. Be sure flowers are fully dry before using resin.

6. Create a Shadow Box

Arrange preserved flowers with a photo, invitation, handwritten note, or ribbon in a deep frame. A shadow box makes a personal display for wedding or memorial flowers.

7. Preserve Petals in a Glass Ornament

Gently place dried petals inside a clear glass ornament or bottle. Add a date tag or small label to remember the occasion behind the flowers.

8. Turn Flowers Into Potpourri

Dry petals, then mix them with spices, dried citrus peel, and a few drops of essential oil. Display the fragrant blend in a bowl or small fabric sachet.

9. Frame a Single Stem

Sometimes one bloom says more than an entire bouquet. Press or air-dry a favorite stem, then frame it against simple paper for timeless wall décor.

10. Make Handmade Paper

Blend recycled paper with water to create pulp, then add dried petals before pressing it into sheets. The finished paper is lovely for notes, gift tags, and scrapbook pages.

Whatever method you choose, preserve flowers as soon as possible for the best results. These small keepsakes let a beautiful memory bloom long after the original bouquet is gone.
