Baking supplies:

  • 250 g graham crackers (or shortbread cookies);
  • 1 can condensed milk (about 400 ml);
  • 150 g chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate);
  • 100 g coconut flakes (pre-toasted);
  • A pinch of salt (optional, to balance the flavor).

1. Prepare the graham cracker base

  1. Crush the graham crackers. Place the graham crackers in a blender or zip-lock bag and crush them with a rolling pin until they are finely ground.
  2. Add the butter. Melt 100g of butter and mix in the crumbs until the mixture holds its shape when pressed.
  3. Pour into the tin. Press the mixture into the base of a 20x20cm tin (or other suitable shape). Use a spoon or glass to level it.

2. Add condensed milk

Pour the condensed milk evenly over the base, spreading it out with a spatula. It will act as the “glue” that will hold all the layers together.

3. Add the filling

  1. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. Scatter the chocolate chips all over the surface. They will melt in the oven and create a rich flavour.
  2. Add coconut flakes Sprinkle coconut flakes over the top. To intensify the flavour, toast them in a dry frying pan until golden brown beforehand.
  3. Finishing touch. For a little salty contrast, add a pinch of sea salt on top.

4. Bake

  1. Preheat the oven. Set the temperature to 175°C (350°F).
  2. Bake. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the top is golden and slightly crispy. Do not overcook: the condensed milk should be caramelized, but not too hard.
  3. Cool. Let the dessert cool completely in the pan so that it sets and becomes easier to cut.

5. Serve

Carefully cut the dessert into squares or rectangles so that they resemble small “gold bars”. You can lightly sprinkle them with gold edible decoration or powder.

Tip.  Add a layer of crushed nuts (walnuts or almonds) under the coconut flakes. Put the dessert in an airtight container. It will stay fresh for up to 5 days.
